When darkness falls and stars awake,
That is when the earth doth quake
For fear of things that are unknown--
And only in night are ever shown
To be not as they seemed before,
But rather-- to be so much more.
Like when, at night, the cool breeze sings
Over grass and rock, as with all things,
It wakes the water from his sleep
So that even the creatures in his deep
Feel him move and are entranced
To join him in his swift, dark dance.
Their dance, a beautiful sight to see,
Gives all who watch it the decree
To join them in their ghastly dance
Seeming of beauty and romance--
One that steals the dancer's breath,
And leaves them in the arms of death.
