Ceres is the Roman goddess of grain, and Her name means "wheat " or "grain". It is still heard in our word cereal. It comes from the root creare, "creation", and refers to Her ability to produce. She is an ancient Italian goddess of the harvest, and Her worship in Rome is very old. During Her festival called the Cerealia, a priestess in white offered first fruits to Her. It was held in April to commemorate the founding of Her temple on the Aventine Hill.
She was equated early on with the Greek Demeter. She forms a triad with her son Liber and daughter Libera, both deities of the vine.
